Episode 33: What Happens If You Die Without a Will in Ontario?

Published September 1, 2025

No Will? The government decides.

Here’s what happens when you pass without a Will in Ontario—and how to help make sure your legacy ends up in the right hands.

Let’s start your plan today.

Darren here, today, let’s talk about something many Canadians put off—having a Will.

If you pass away without a Will in Ontario, your estate doesn’t automatically go to who you think. Instead, provincial laws decide. That could mean delays, unexpected taxes, or family tension during an already difficult time.

No Will means no named executor. That means someone will have to apply to the courts to manage your estate—often causing stress, cost, and confusion.

And if you have children or dependents, not having a Will could delay how their needs are met or put their future in the hands of someone you didn’t choose.

A proper Will helps ensure your wishes are clear, your loved ones are protected, and your legacy is honoured.

Let’s make sure your estate plan reflects the life you’ve built—and protects the people you care about.
